The 1st Junior Roll Ball World Cup kicked off yesterday at the iconic Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, with a proud moment for Tharaka Nithi County as one of its own, Shaniz Kendi, took to the court wearing national colours and representing Kenya on the global stage.

The opening ceremony was graced by several leaders among them Tharaka Nithi County Sports and Youths CECM Moreen Nyambura, who expressed the county government’s unwavering commitment to nurturing young talent and investing in youth empowerment.

Speaking at the event, Nyambura highlighted the need for counties across the country to prioritize sports development as a key pillar of youth transformation and national pride.

Kendi, a bright student at Iruma Girls’ Secondary School in Chogoria Ward, Maara Constituency, has emerged as one of the standout players in Kenya’s junior Roll Ball squad.

Her journey to the world stage is a testimony to the untapped potential in rural and marginalized areas — and a call to action for more structured support systems to grow such talent.

“Kendi’s participation is not just a personal achievement; it is a reflection of what our youth can achieve when given the opportunity and support,” said CECM Nyambura. “We are immensely proud of her and we celebrate her as a beacon of hope and inspiration for many others.”

With Roll Ball still gaining traction in Kenya, Kendi’s presence at the World Cup amplifies the importance of investing in diverse sports disciplines and giving young people platforms to thrive.

Her success serves as a reminder that with mentorship, exposure, and encouragement, youth from every corner of the country can rise to the highest levels of achievement.

As the tournament continues through June 28, Shaniz and her teammates are not only chasing victory but also carrying the dreams of their communities with them. The people of Tharaka Nithi County, and indeed the entire nation, will be watching with pride and anticipation.

In the words of CECM Nyambura, “Let us continue to invest in and uplift our young talents — for they are the champions of tomorrow.”

The Governor Muthomi Njuki led government is also upgrading stadiums across the three constituencies; Tharaka Maara and Chuka/Igambang’ombe to ensure that youths have facilities for sharpening their sporting talents.

Last week, Ms Nyambura went round the county issuing footballs to primary schools learners as a way of nurturing the young talents.
