Dedan Kimathi Foundation Distributes Tree Seedlings To Magumu Farmers In Kinangop, Nyandarua County

Over the last half a decade, tree growing groups, organizations and government bodies have highly concentrated on growing trees in public places including schools, degraded forest lands, river lines and around water catchment areas. This has greatly contributed to increased national tree cover despite private land owners being left behind.
As the nation continues to grow trees towards 30% tree cover target as directed by the president, Dedan Kimathi Foundation has embarked on a journey to equip farmers with tree seedlings to grow in their portions of land. Benefiting today, Thursday 30th May, were Magumu location farmers in Kinangop, Nyandarua County.
The Foundation in collaboration with the sensational Kikuyu Music composer and singer, Jose Gatutura (Machete the King), has taken tree growing a notch higher by striving to ensure all individuals interested in tree growing access tree seedlings through donations. This program is targeted to benefit all the residents of Nyandarua County.
‘As a resident of Magumu location, I have been motivated to ignite tree growing in this areas that has been experiencing extremely strong winds. With enough trees, our place will be more conducive to stay, ” said the artist as he addressed the farmers.
Dedan Kimathi Foundation Field Director; Ms. Elsey Githinji, took the chance to encourage the farmers to ensure they cover at least 30% of their farms with trees so as to enjoy the benefits arising from trees. To maintain the required tree cover once achieved, Ms. Githinji advised the residents to ensure they replace all the trees they cut or plant some before cutting to prevent land bareness.
