Freedom is expensive.
Purchase it for yourself—
Do not redeem it while
In slavery-tattered clothes,
Especially in a foreign land,
The enslavers might chain you again.
You want it, then deny slavery,
Cast away those old garments,
Put on elegant ones, smell nice.
And when they ask
If you were traded for slavery,
Say “yes, but now I am not.”
Put your head low and vanish
To lands untravelled and
A soil unstepped,
For when you are there,
Tell them that freedom
Is bought by one’s commitment
To one’s own value of human dignity.
True liberation begins within yourself.
