106 witnesses lined up to testify in Kieni parliamentary seat petition

A total of 106 people are expected to take the witness box at the High Court when hearing of a petition challenging the parliamentary election results for Kieni constituency kicks off next month.
The petitioners; former Kieni NG-CDF chairman James Maina Munene and former Kieni Member of Parliament Kanini Kega’s Personal Assistant Geoffrey Wahome have lined up 62 witnesses who are expected to show and proof before the court that the electioneering exercise was not free and fair.
On the other hand, the MP Anthony Njoroge Wainaina alias Chieni has 44 witnesses who will be expected to dismantle the evidence by petitioners and their witnesses and convince the court that the current MP was validly elected.
Yesterday, Justice Dora Chepkwony ruled that hearing of the petition will start from December 13 and run up to December 22.
In another petition, Senior Principal Magistrate James Macharia ordered scrutiny and recount of votes cast in respect to election of Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Thegu River Ward in Kieni constituency.
The Magistrate ruled that the petitioner in the case, Simon Mwangi alias Simo Wa Nyeri had demonstrated that there were malpractices during the voting, counting and tabulation of results.
He ordered for a recount of five out of 18 polling stations which the petitioner had cited for having massive malpractices during the exercise.
During the last General Election, Mwangi who contested on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket lost to Patrick Wachira who was an Independent candidate.
The presiding Magistrate ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to avail election materials in respect to the five wards before the court today for scrutiny and recounting.
A report on the same should be tabled before his court on Thursday for further directions.
