Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua flagged off the first shipment of subsidized fertilizer. Source DP Gachagua Twitter

Worth Noting:
- In his acceptance speech, he stated. As I promised you, my government has reduced the prices of this commodity by half with immediate effect. The farmers will start to receive subsidized fertilisers in one week.
- Notably, the high cost of life was one of issue that continued to haunt the outgoing government. For the farmers, they had no kind words. We are currently buying a 50kg bag of fertilizers at Sh6, 500. We have been asking the government to reduce the prices but it has failed to heed our call. We will show their project [ in apparent to Azimio La Umoja-OKA presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua] dust at the ballot.
I’m one of those who had read a post in social media that President William Ruto’s government was selling fertilizers donated by a Russian company.
I would not however believe these reports because I knew there were so many political players who got so disappointed after they lost the presidential elections. They were yet to come to terms that a son of peasant was occupying the highest seat in the land.
For this reason, maybe the author had been hired to work on behalf of them?
I know here I risk being branded a sycophant of President Ruto who was desperately seeking the attention of senior leaders in his administration so that they can give me a job. If there are people who thought so, I want to tell them. These were cheap and baseless claims.
I have been writing for many years and I am sure many would agree with me. I write pieces hinged on truth, sound and objective analysis.
I would be rich by now if I was doing this for financial gains. If you come to Githurai [44] where I reside, you will find that Joseph Mutua is a hustler. So, what does he do for a living? He was relying on a stipend he was receiving from a Good Samaritan who had seen his potential.
This person, who was a key adviser of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has since relocated to the US. In a series of text messages, the other day she told me. Ndonga, I have done my part.
For now, I’m no to longer in a position to support you. I wish you well and take care of your health condition. I’m diabetic.
She further advised me to talk to my friends in the new government of President William Samoei Ruto. I’m sure they will do something. The writing is in your blood. You do your work objectively and you are non- partisan. So your articles become a good read.
Initially, I was working with an NGO called Youth Agenda. This was until 2011 when I fell out with civil society due to my stand on the International Criminal Court [ICC] trial of Jubilee flag bearers Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto.
I believed the charges leveled against them were false and politically motivated. The prosecutor was working at the behest of their political rivals who felt that the duo posed a real threat to their ascendancy to power.
Back to the question of fertilizers, let me first say this. During the campaigns, Dr Ruto made a raft of promises. The reduction of the prices of various brands of fertilizers was one of them. As it turned out, this issue was in his mind when he took the oath of office.
In his acceptance speech, he stated. As I promised you, my government has reduced the prices of this commodity by half with immediate effect. The farmers will start to receive subsidized fertilisers in one week.
Notably, the high cost of life was one of issue that continued to haunt the outgoing government. For the farmers, they had no kind words. In one of the post, the Agriculture CS Peter Munya was quoted alleging. The fertilizers that Dr William Ruto’s government was distributing had been donated by a Russian Company. So, why should you sell the commodity to farmers? He said that is reason why I skipped DP Rigathi Gachagua’s event of flagging off the Lorries transporting the fertilizers.
I want to ask him two questions. Where were you when farmers were crying? I would have expected you to negotiate with that company so that they can get free fertilizers.
There is also the issue of shipment from EU ports to Kenya, transport of the commodity locally and also the storage charges. So, even if we assume that this was a donation, whom did you expect to cater for this cost? Munya was a chief campaigner of Raila.
Well, I read the statement issued by Russian Embassy in Nairobi. The Embassy vehemently rubbished claims that the fertilizers had been donated. We caution Kenyans not to fall prey to rumors and fake stories circulating in social media.
