Nyeri County has been listed as one of the beneficiaries of a new programme by the World Bank to be rolled out in 20 wards an increase from the previous six covered under the Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP).
This was a message conveyed by a team from the World Bank led by Shobha Shetty who heads 12 African Countries and Vinay Kumar Vutukuru, a Senior Agriculture and Rural Development Specialist, who had paid a courtesy call to Governor Mutahi Kahiga and Deputy Governor David Kinaniri.
The team commended the excellent work done by the County Government through the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, having been ranked position one for the past four years in a row in the implementation of KCSAP programmes.
KCSAP covers many value chains including horticultural crops, dairy sector (biogas), bananas, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, among others and has benefittesd over 400 farmers’ groups in the six wards namely Mukurweini Central, Rugi, Thegu River, Gatarakwa, Mugunda and Gakawa.
This has increased income generation, boosted food production, job creation, improved livelihood, mitigation of climate change among other benefits.
The Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KSCAP) aims at increasing agricultural productivity and building resilience to climate change risk in the targeted smallholders farming and pastoral communities in Kenya, and in event of an eligible crisis or emergency to provide immediate and effective response. The programme is being implemented in 24 counties countrywide though it’s almost coming to end.
Others present during the courtesy call were Agriculture CEC James Wachihi, Chief Officer Ruth Mwangi, Nyeri KCSAP Coordinator Alice Gichuki, County Secretary Ben Gachichio, Political Advisor Washington Kariuki, Michael Njuguna and James Musinga from the World Bank among others.
