KEFRI DONATES TOWARDS PROF. WANGARI MAATHAI TREE PLANTING INITIATIVE

A tree planting initiative in commemoration of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai received a boost yesterday with donations aimed at realising the planting of 10 million trees.
Nyeri County Deputy Governor David Kinaniri received 500,000 potting bags from the Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI) in support of the ambitious initiative.
In August 2020, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry initiated a school greening program together with the Catholic Church Archdiocese of Nyeri, with Nyeri County being the pilot county.
This program dubbed “The Wangari Maathai 10 million Tree Challenge” was launched earlier this year and aims to plant at least 10 million trees seedlings for public Institutions in Nyeri majorly the secondary schools and phase two will target the willing primary schools.
The potting bags will be distributed and used in planting seedlings in public Institutions as well as surrounding communities. Nyeri County continues to be the leading County with a 48.3 % forest cover and targeting over 50% forest cover.
The Deputy Governor lauded the organisation for the donation saying this will help address the climate change challenge.
Other stakeholders in the program include Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI), Kenya Forest Services (KFS), Kenya Water Towers Director, County Directorate Ministry of Education, KEFR and KWTA each of these contributing various resources to the program.
Also present were CECM Water, Irrigation, Environment and Climate Change Fredrick Kinyua who is the Chairman of the program and co-chairman Fr. Peterson, a Director at Catholics Church’s charitable arm; Caritas.
