Human Rights Commission Probe Increase Murder Incidents in Gusii Region

Kenya National Commission on Human Right (KNCHR) is in Kisii County to carry out an inquiry over the increased number of murder cases in the region in the last one year.
Speaking with the press on Monday , 16, January, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Bernard Mogesa stated that over the recent past in Gusii region has been on the limelight of the increased murder .
Mogesa said he said that as a commission they are unhappy as human rights have been violated promising that they will ensure that justice has prevailed to the victims.
Article 26 of the constitution of Kenya under the Bill of Rights, guarantees all Kenyans the right to life. Therefore, no Kenyan should lose their life because of some ill-defined accusations like witchcraft; which are difficult to prove in courts of law.
The commission urged public to volunteer and to turn out in large number to give the information on the murders assuring they will protect those who will give out information.
“No one is going to be victimized nor exposed for giving out the information, “he said.
The commission will cooperate with Kisii and Nyamira counties during the exercise.
In 2021 the commission detailed in its report the lynching of the elderly persons accused of being witches which prompted Kisii County government formed as taskforce to probe on the incidents.
Law society of Kenya (LSK) South West Nyanza branch chair, Gideon Nyambati, on Tuesday January 10, deplored the increasing cases of murder cases in the county, and said that they have overwhelmed judicial officers.
Nyambati stated that at Kisii law court, there are 92 murder cases pending in court and only one Judge and they are is expecting the Judiciary to post another Judge.
He condemned murder cases, he implored witnesses who record statements to attend court and testify for the cases to be prosecuted, stressed those who defy risk arrest and be compelled to testify.
The commission said that members of the public should be encouraged to use lawful channels and mechanisms to bring about the desired justice and redress.
The Economic Survey for 2022 indicates registered murder cases and convictions obtained by the High Court from 2017 to 2021.
In 2021, 44 cases were recorded, 40 in 2020 and 52 in 2019 and 2018 respectively. In 2017, only 34 cases were recorded
The team will carry out an inquiry for five days following the recent killings that has sent Gusii Region to trend
