Joy As Gathuthuma Mixed Day Secondary School Produces Its First University Student

An electric celebration mood has hit a village at the base of Mount Kenya following revelations that their school has produced its first students who will be joining University.
Kennedy Ndurere has since Friday become the talk of Gathuthuma village in Kirinyaga Central constituency after he beat all odds to attain an aggregate of A Minus with 77 points during the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
The 16-year-old student’s steering performance puts Gathuthuma Mixed Day Secondary School in a historical place among schools of its calibre in Kirinyaga County since 2013 when it was founded.
The school that has since its establishment been sharing most of its amenities with a primary school bearing the same name is usually referred by the locals as a CDF Secondary school since it credits most of its infrastructure to funding from National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
Parents have over the years been shunning from enrolling their children in the institution, with those joining being looked down by their peers and being described as failures.
Thus, when the government released the 2022 KCSE results, the school administration led by the Board of Management chairman CPA Chris Githinji and Principal Bilha Muthoni immediately swang into celebratory mood.
Together with the other management members’ teachers, students and villagers, they danced along the dusty streets of the sleepy Gathuthuma trading centre.

Githinji who is a lecturer at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and also the Chairman ICPAK Mt. Kenya Branch said that much has been done to change the mindset and attitude of the parent and learners towards day schools through mentorship.
He commended Ndurere who joined the school in form one for exemplary performance in just released 2022 results.
He thanked teachers for hardwork and parents for the support they have given the school since he was elected the chairman in 2015.
The CDF Kirinyaga Central and Ministry of Education has constructed classes and a laboratory however the school lacks administration block and kitchen, which the chairman urged well-wishers to chip in putting them up.
