The Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights, led by Vice-Chair Senator Raphael Chimera, yesterday held a meeting to consider the petition presented by the Senator for Kericho County, Aaron Cheruiyot, on behalf of the Kipsigis Community Clans Organization. The petition seeks redress for historical land injustices committed by the British colonial government against the Kipsigis.
According to the Kipsigis community, the British colonial government forcefully evicted them from their ancestral land after the First World War, giving it to British soldiers in the name of the British East African Disabled Officers Colony. The community is now seeking compensation and an apology from the British Government for the damage caused by the forceful eviction and use of their land.
To gather further information on historical injustices suffered, the committee plans a visit to Kericho County to receive submissions from the affected.
The meeting was attended by Senators Okoiti Omtatah, William Cheptumo, Hamida Kibwana, Catherine Mumma, Veronicah Maina, and Karen Nyamu.
