South Mugirango residents have held peaceful demonstrations following the closure of Nduru Sub County Hospital.
The hospital was closed down over the attack of health workers by goons who were in the line of duty led to the health workers to down tools.
On April, 12, 2023, a mob of armed goons forced themselves into the hospital and attacked county health team who was on official duty, hurling stones and other crude and other crude objects at the officers as they escaped for their safety.
The protesters were against the relocation of anesthesia machine to Keumbu Hospital in Nyaribari Chache Constituency.
According to Kisii County government, the communication was officially made by the chief officer of health; apparently the hospital had two anesthesia machines with only one in use rendering one idle.
The residents called upon local leaders who are inciting the members of the public to put aside their political differences and focus on development issues.
A section of the residents said that the closure of the hospitals is rendering the vulnerable members miserable.
“We are suffering common Mwananchi, we do not have money to seek health services far away health facilities, and this is being unfair to us, Joseph Ondari
They said that the hospital is more beneficial to them unlike the politicians who have money and are capable to seek services outside the county.
The residents said that they are aware some politicians are behind the closure of the hospital and asked them to step down and put aside their differences.
“Time for politicking is over, let those who want to test the waters to wait till 2027,” Dennis Nyakang’i said.
The residents pleaded to the National government to chip in and save the situation, citing that most of the patients who sought services from that hospital are suffering.
The Healthcare unions resolved to declare the hospital and surrounding community hostile and asked the workers to withdraw their services.
They also asked security agencies to move with speed and investigate the matter with urgency and those who will be found culpable to face the law.
The unions asked the Kisii county government to find a political solution in the affected area in order to foster confidence in the health workers before they resume duties.
