Kisii County Government has allocated Ksh. 145 million for a ward bursary, which was disbursed to numerous secondary school students from needy families.
The aim was to enhance their learning and alleviate the financial burden on parents and guardians.
Governor Simba Arati distributed the cheques at Gusii Stadium and mentioned that each ward received Ksh. 3 million.
He also announced that the bursary fund would be increased to Ksh. 5 million in the following financial year.
Governor Arati expressed satisfaction with the bursary program, considering the significant challenges faced by students from disadvantaged backgrounds in affording their school fees.
He highlighted that the bursary had been discontinued four years ago, with the funds diverted by the previous administration.
However, through a supplementary budget, the current administration was able to provide relief to needy students by releasing the funds to support their education.
The county bursary allocated an average of Ksh. 3 million to each electoral ward, and the fund was managed transparently.
To prevent any potential misconduct or fraudulent activities during the fund disbursement, the governor stated that the money would be sent directly to the respective 1,250 schools where beneficiaries were enrolled.
The students would receive acknowledgement vouchers, which they would present to their schools. The schools’ accounts would then verify the details and issue official receipts.
Governor Arati urged the students to seize the opportunity provided by the bursary and strive for academic excellence.
He emphasized that the county government was committed to funding their education.
He also encouraged the students to avoid engaging in immoral behaviors that could jeopardize their futures and undermine their parents’ efforts in supporting their education.
Furthermore, the governor announced that the county government would hire Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers on a permanent basis once the Public Service Board was established.
He advised the benefiting students to work diligently and achieve impressive academic results, as this would demonstrate the value of the bursary program.
