The National Assembly Education Committee, chaired Julius Melly (Tinderet) has resolved to work closely with the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) to ensure the institution achieves its mandate.
Speaking today after the Committee conducted a familiarization and inspection visit of the institute’s headquarters in Kasarani, Nairobi County, Melly underscored the importance of KISE in ensuring all children with special needs access an education, noting that it needs to be strengthened.
“KISE has done a good job, despite the challenges it faces in financing. As a committee, we pledge our full support to the institute as it undertakes its important roles,” said the chairperson.
During an earlier session with the management, KISE Director Dr. Norman Kiogora and Council chairperson Habat Sheikh Abdi told the MPs that the agency was established in 1986 through a legal notice, lamenting that this fact has hampered their operations and plans to devolve their services.
Hon Melly in response to the concern said they will collaborate with the institution to develop an Act of Parliament that will fully anchor it to the law, and by extension strengthen the special needs education sector.
