Research Institute Unveils New Technology To Improve Crop Production In Dryland Areas

The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has introduced new farming technologies to boost smallholder farmers in semi-arid areas.
These technologies include conservation agriculture, mulching, minimum soil disturbance, zai pits, and using certified seed.
Dr. Henry Ojulong, ICRISAT Senior Plant Breeder for sorghum and millet, underscored the importance of technologies’ in conserving water and elevating crop productivity, resilience, and sustainability.
Dr. Ojulong also introduced drought-resistant and tolerant crops, such as sorghum, finger millet, pearl millet, and green grams, which take a short period to mature with minimal rainfall.
Farmers are encouraged to intercrop and have crop rotation to maximise yields. Farmers like Fibi Mwangangi have reported increased farm yields and better training, with farmers able to harvest more food and have a ready market for their produce.
Mwangangi is leading five Women Groups, who are using the new technologies to add value to their crops and generate income.
