Tharaka Nithi County governor Muthomi Njuki has cautioned Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua against dragging the Mt. Kenya region in his woes, insisting what is going on between him and president William Ruto is personal.
According to the governor, communities residing in the 11 Mt. Kenya counties stood to lose out if they took sides this early and abandoned the government they fought so hard to put in place.
Njuki said he will disassociate the residents of his county from what he describes as a defeatist argument.
The political space that is the Mt. Kenya region seems to be restless by the day as politicians in the ruling United Democratic Alliance take sides in a feud setting the party leader who is also the president William Ruto and his deputy.
Whilst Gachagua says he is being persecuted for agitating for the unity of Mt. Kenya, there are those pushing the narrative that he has fallen out with his boss for selfish reasons.
Tharaka Nithi governor Muthomi Njuki believes the war, if any, should not involve the people of Mt. Kenya as they did not rally behind the duo in the 2022 elections only for them to cause friction this early
Njuki who spoke in Maara constituency at the burial of Humphrey Riungu Mwongera, father to medical services and ICT Chief Officer Aggrey Riungu, said the war within UDA should be the least of worries for the people of Tharaka Nithi and thus they should not be forced to take a position on it.
Gachagua has been on a mission to unite the people of Mt. Kenya; one he says is almost succeeding.
On Friday, at a church function in Ruiru, Kiambu County, Gachagua castigated some leaders from Mt. Kenya who were against his unity calls, saying those not in his fold were few leaders who are yet to move with the winds of change.
Gachagua has also noted he would be seeking to join forces with former president Uhuru Kenyatta in his unity quest
But governor Njuki doubts his intentions, urging the people of Mt. Kenya and Tharaka Nithi especially, not to ‘get lost in the bush’ following the deputy president blindly without asking what he was offering as development to them.
The battle lines are drawn as those in president Ruto’s corner and those in Gachagua’s corner continue preaching their gospel, discrediting the other in the hope their voices will be louder and yield fruits.
