Nyeri County gubernatorial aspirant Dr Thuo Mathenge and his deputy nominee Dr Esther Wanjiru being blessed by their parents and clergy at Itundu Village, Mathira constituency on Saturday.

- An extremely excited Dr Wanjiru vowed not to let down her aged parents, Mary Wacheke and Naftaly Waweru as well as Dr Mathenge’s mother Margaret Waruguru who attentively listened to her speech.
- “I have never let you down. You have never let me down. I will not let you down, ” Dr Wanjiru said as she urged those present to be their ambassadors, solicit votes for them.
- The deputy governor nominee explained that she decided to seek the blessings first since she believes nothing can be achieved without involving those who have seen you through thin and thick.
With only three months left to the General Election, those seeking various political seats are leaving nothing to chance in their bid to woe as many voters on their side as is possible.
Every political trick is being applied with the sole aim of improving one’s chance of being declared the winner of the position being sought.
From holding prayer sessions, night vigil, townhall meetings, public rallies and closed door sessions, politicians have activated their leadership antennas.
However, rarely are these leaders heard or seen seeking blessing from their ancestral roots before holding public meetings.
In a rare occurrence, a University don over the weekend decided to break the cycle by seeking her parents blessings before holding her first ever political meeting.
Dr Esther Wanjiru, a lecture at Karatina and Kimathi universities sought her parents and extended family blessings before going out to seek support in her bid to be a Deputy Governor in Nyeri County.
The event, held at her parents’ home in Itundu, Iriaini ward, Mathira constituency comes barely three weeks after she was nominated by industrialist and aspiring Nyeri County Governor Dr Thuo Mathenge to be his deputy governor nominee.
And on Saturday, before hundreds of relatives, neighbours and friends, Dr Mathenge and Dr Wanjiru received special blessings from their parents and elders in a colourful ceremony.
Addressing the gathering after the prayer session that also involved clergy from different denominations, Dr Wanjiru revealed how she was surprised by Dr Mathenge’s proposal to be his deputy governor.
She said, she was more shocked to learn that her name was given to the aspiring governor by a casual labourer whom she had met last more than 10 years ago when she was a banker.
On his part, Dr Mathenge disclosed that he received five proposals for his deputy governor nominee, some by prominent personalities but settled on the one proposed by the casual worker as she impressed him more than the others.
He said he was optimistic that they will win during the forthcoming General Election and liberate the county residents from the yoke of poverty by among other things addressing various misdeeds performed by the past administrations.

The deputy governor nominee explained that she decided to seek the blessings first since she believes nothing can be achieved without involving those who have seen you through thin and thick.
“I am making my vow today. I have what it takes to assist Dr Mathenge achieve his dream for Nyeri County. That is I decided before anything else, I seek you blessings and I know we shall win,” she said as she thanked her parents, siblings, relatives, neighbours and friends.
On his part, Dr Mathenge said he will not frustrate or make his deputy a flower girl but would instead engage her in daily running of the county.
“I will say this before my mother, Dr Wanjiru’s parents, my wife, children and Dr Wanjiru’s siblings, once we win, I will give my deputy two ministries to head so that she is not seen as a flower girl as it is happening today in this county of ours,” he disclosed to the applause of the gathering.
Dr Mathenge also outlined some of his manifesto and how he hoped to create jobs by initiating various projects.
The colourful ceremony was also attended by dozens of aspirants, seeking various seats under the sponsorship of The New Democrats (TND) political party which Dr Mathenge is the national chairman.
Also present was the party National Executive Director Michael Mwangi Kibicho and the party’s Nyeri County chairman Kagotho Nguitui.
Dr Mathenge will be squaring it with among others, the Incumbent who will be defending his seat on UDA ticket Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga, Senator Ephraim Maina Kirinyaga who will be seeking to be a governor under Jubilee party sponsorship, economist Peter Maina Munyiri of Chama Cha Kazi and another economist Gachara Kamanga alias Anko G of Vision 2030 who will be running as an independent candidate.
