Officials from Narok and Bomet counties have partnered to combat massive donkey theft.
The commissioners, Kipkech Lotiatia and Dr. Omar Ahmed (Bomet), have established a multi-agency team to protect domestic animals.
The team will include officers from the veterinary department, public health, National Police Service, National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), and farming system Kenya.
They will hold meetings and strategise on protecting domestic animals.
Lotiatia emphasised the importance of enforcing animal protection laws and ensuring that public meat is approved by the department of public health.
He also warned against slaughtering and eating meat from dead or sick animals, as this could cause diseases and deaths.
“Those found selling meat in substandard places or meat that is not recommended by the public health department should be arrested and prosecuted immediately. This is the only way we will ensure that the public is consuming the right meat,” he underscored.
Dr. Ahmed emphasised the need for the two counties to work together for the benefit of the people living in the border counties.
He also called on the public to report any attempts to slaughter a dead animal for consumption to the police. Farming System Kenya (FSK) confirmed massive transportation of donkeys, stating that the population of donkeys in Narok is slowly dwindling.
Dr. Yegon Kibet of FSK said bush meat is dangerous as it exposes residents to zoonotic diseases like anthrax and rabies.
Kibet called on residents to report donkey disappearance and slaughter to the authorities so as to protect the beast of burden that is on the verge of becoming extinct.
