An appeal has been made to the State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education to pay salary arrears for 92 part-time teachers in Makueni County amounting to Sh1.84 million. Making the appeal, the Makueni County Adult and Continuing Education Officer (CACEO), Prisca Nduku, said that the part-time teachers have not been paid their salary of Sh2,000 for the last 10 months. “Some 92 part-teachers have not been paid for five months each in the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 financial years, respectively. They are paid Sh2,000 per month, whereby each is expecting arrears of Sh20,000,” said Nduku during the celebration of International Literacy Day at Kibwezi Catholic Technical Institute in Kibwezi Sub County.
Dozens of teenage mothers from Siaya have received digital literacy training, funded by the French embassy and Siaya Muungano network. The “she deserves rights and skills project” aims to empower them to use technology to improve their lives. The beneficiaries, including young mothers and victims of teenage pregnancy, were trained on proper internet usage and digital platforms for online work. The project aims to ensure that young mothers change their lives positively through available resources. The African Women Economic Policy Network (AWEPON) Director, Mildred Andere, urged the graduates to utilise knowledge to market their products using technology and gain linkages to financial institutions for growth. Both Siaya Muungano Network, AWEPON, and Stawisha Initiative will continue visiting the graduates in their communities to encourage them to be agents of change.
Months after the Alternative Justice System (AJS) was introduced at the Kenol Law courts, Murang’a south subcounty, the judiciary has made remarkable progress as it seeks to reduce the backlog and ensure a speedy resolution of cases.
As at now, the local case clearance stands at 79 per cent, and Kenol Court ranks as one of the best performing facilities in the country, in a sheer commitment to excellence in the delivery of justice.
Area Senior Resident Magistrate Sheila Nyagah observed that since its operationalisation on November 12, 2022, the court has had a workload of 8054 filed cases, while 6383 of them had been fully resolved. “As of September 4, 2024, we had handled a total of 8054 cases, including 1616 civil suits and 6438 criminal trials,” she said. “Further, as a court, we have managed to resolve 6383 litigations from the case workload, and currently the pending backlog stands at 869 (civil) and 802 criminal cases,” added Nyagah.
Beneficiaries of adult education perform a song during the celebrations in Kirinyaga County. Speaking at Kirinyaga County Headquarters, Kerugoya, during celebrations to mark International Literacy Day 2024, the County Coordinator for Adult and Continuing Education, Elizabeth Peter, said the literacy level in the Kirinyaga is commendable, adding that they are taking the necessary steps to achieve 100 per cent.
Ms. Elizabeth observes that the current enrolment for adult education in the entire county stands at 1,066 and called for those who have not joined to do so, especially the bodaboda drivers.
In the ongoing operations targeting sale, distribution and consumption of narcotic drugs, a multi-agency security team operating at the Sabaki Bridge roadblock in Msufini intercepted a red motorcycle and conducted a search leading to the discovery of 50 rolls of dry plant material wrapped in khaki papers and two bundles of loose dry plant material wrapped in old newspapers, all suspected to be cannabis. These items were found stuffed in a yellowish gunny bag held by a pillion passenger namely John Hero Komora, 31. All three occupants of the motorcycle have been arrested and are currently in custody, awaiting arraignment.
