Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Opiyo Wandayi, has announced a significant push towards expanding electricity access across the region, particularly through last-mile connectivity projects.

At the recent commissioning of the Sh25.6 million Nyamchodhre Market Electrification Project in Awendo Sub County, he highlighted the government’s commitment to driving social and economic development through enhanced electrification.

He said Migori County has been allocated a whopping Sh200 million for various electrification initiatives, which are at different stages of completion.

This funding, he said, will help ensure that more communities gain access to reliable electricity, with the Nyamchodhre project set to benefit 305 households, boosting local economic activities and improving the quality of life.

Wandayi also shared updates on the upcoming Transmission Line from Awendo to Isebania, which features a substation at Masaba. This line is eagerly awaiting commissioning, promising to strengthen the electricity supply in the area. Additional projects, such as those from Sondu to Ndhiwa and Narok to Bomet, are also in the pipeline, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to reliable energy solutions.

The CS emphasized the importance of last-mile connectivity projects in ensuring consistent electricity supply throughout Nyanza. He noted that Kenya Power is also implementing stop-gap measures to stabilise power delivery, especially in regions like Kericho and Bomet.

On the topic of addressing power outages, Wandayi pointed out the upcoming mini-grids for Ngodhe and Takawiri islands in Homabay, which aim to provide immediate solutions. He reassured residents that the government is dedicated to optimising electricity transmission efficiency to minimise losses and ensure that users receive value for their investments.

Beatrice Njuguna, the General Manager of the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), echoed these sentiments and thanked the community for their support in the electrification efforts. She mentioned that REREC is actively working on various initiatives, including mini-grids, stand-alone solar projects, and hybrid solutions, all aimed at connecting even more Kenyans to the national grid.

Additionally, Awendo Member of Parliament Walter Owino expressed his determination to advocate for his constituents, ensuring that electricity connectivity remains a priority.

In the 2023/2024 Financial Year, Awendo Sub County was allocated Sh56 million for electricity connectivity.
