Nyeri County government has emerged as the overall best county on matters budget and transparency.
The County government under the stewardship of Governor Mutahi Kahiga has been ranked Position One out of the 47 counties during the Kenya County Budget Transparency Survey (CBTS) 2021.
It scored 72 points while West Pokot had 71 points and Elgeyo Marakwet scored 69 points.
The three counties have the most transparent budgets, according to a survey released yesterday by the International Budget Partnership Kenya (IBPK) Kenya.
Turkana and Samburu counties locked up the remaining two slots in the top five after scoring 67 points each.
The annual survey conducted by the IBPK evaluated how many documents a county uploads on its website.
The County published all the 10 key documents that were evaluated in the CBTS 2021.
Nyeri was recognized among the counties that made the most significant gains by providing the highest information at 72 per cent.
This was also an improvement after a similar survey last year which ranked Nyeri number 3.
The governor while receiving the award commended the staff of the Department for Finance and Economic Planning for their exemplary hard work, dedication and devotion in their work.
“What Wanjiku needs is good governance which is run in an open manner with transparency and accountability. The Government of the people by the people for the people. Let leaders not plan for the next election but for the next generation,” he said.
The CBTS evaluates the budget information that the Public Finance Management Act requires counties to make available to the public on how the government raises and spends public resources.
The county through governor Kahiga was awarded during an event held at Serena Hotel, Nairobi.
This comes barely a week after the County Government of Nyeri’s Department of Health was recognized and awarded for the best performance in the Country on COVID-19 vaccination uptake.
Others present were Lamu Governor Fahim Twaha, Baringo Governor, Stanley Kiptis, Finance CEC Robert Thuo, Economic Planning Chief Officer Francis Kirira, Senior Economists Chris Muguro and Gibson Mwangi, Political advisor Washington Kariuki among others.
