Nyeri County governor Mutahi Kahiga addressing the forum yesterday
By NCGPT
Nyeri County continues to be a vulnerable spot for radicalization and recruitment to violent extremism and terrorism, mainly targeting the youth, due to its geographical position proximal to hot spot counties in the north.
For this reason, Nyeri County led by H.E Mutahi Kahiga established a County Action Plan for Prevention and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE-CAP) with support from the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF).
While opening the Foundation for Dialogue (FFD) County Engagement Forum Project Inception Conference at Quad Vadis youth hub, Governor Kahiga noted that his administration is committed to continue preventing and countering violent extremism work by mainstreaming the work in all its community engagement programmes.
Nyeri County has also incorporated business leaders to mentor at-risk youth and supported cultural elders to mentor youth initiates which has led to establishment of a bigger and sustainable cohort of PCVE Champions.
Through support by Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCREF), through Act Change Transform (ACT!), FFD is currently implementing the Accelerated Response against Violent Extremism in Nyeri County from May 2022 to April 2023. The overall goal of the program will be to strengthen Nyeri’s CEF to co-ordinate and implement the ‘Usalama Nyeri- Juhudi Letu’ program under the NSCVE-NCAP.
Governor Kahiga thanked the Tony Blair Institute Global which has assisted the County Executive to Develop the Nyeri County Community Resilience Against Violent Extremism Bill, 2022 which is currently under consideration for presentation to the Assembly once the County Assembly reconvenes from recess.
