Nairobi, Kenya — Hon. Dr. Gathoni Wamuchomba, Chairperson of the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee, has mourned the passing of Roseline Odede, the Chairperson of the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), describing her as a trailblazer in the fight for human rights and constitutional implementation in Kenya.
In her tribute, Hon. Wamuchomba lauded Odede’s unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of all Kenyans, particularly women, children, and the youth. Despite financial challenges at the KHRC, Odede’s determination saw her personally supporting those in need, earning admiration across the nation.
“Her resilience in championing the rights of women, children, and youth will forever resonate in our hearts,” Hon. Wamuchomba stated.
Odede was also a vocal advocate for institutional reforms, frequently highlighting pressing issues such as the lapse of constitutional timelines for boundary reviews in March 2024. She raised concerns about the under-resourcing of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), which operates with just six regional offices and a staff capacity of 30%, far below its operational needs.
Hon. Wamuchomba extended her condolences to Odede’s family and colleagues, reflecting on her remarkable legacy of service. “On behalf of myself, my family, and the members of my committee, I extend my deepest condolences. We share in this deep grief and celebrate the remarkable legacy she leaves behind,” she said.
As the nation mourns, hopes remain that Odede’s vision for improved resources and operational capacity in human rights institutions will inspire future reforms.
