Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development Mutahi Kagwe yesterday led the Kenyan delegation in a bilateral meeting with Dr. Qu Dongyu, Director General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in Rome. During the discussions, the CS expressed Kenya’s appreciation for FAO’s 48-year partnership, which has significantly contributed to the country’s agricultural development agenda. He reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to food security and sustainable agriculture, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration.
Officials from the Kenya Dental Association (KDA) paid a courtesy call on the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Mr. Harry Kimtai, to advocate for the strengthening of oral health within the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) framework. The discussions focused on key areas, including the expansion of Social Health Authority (SHA) benefits to cover comprehensive oral healthcare services. The officials also highlighted the need to boost local manufacturing, as over 90% of dental materials and equipment are currently imported, leading to high costs and limited accessibility. To enhance grassroots awareness and promote early intervention, the meeting emphasized the importance of training 750 Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in oral health. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of shifting from curative to preventive care, ensuring timely diagnosis and management of oral health conditions.
The Ministry of Health has launched a nationwide campaign to tackle the growing crisis of drug and substance abuse, targeting regions with the highest prevalence. This initiative, spanning all 47 counties in 10 clusters, focuses on equipping communities with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent addiction and support recovery. During a stakeholder meeting in Mombasa, which brought together representatives from six coastal counties, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, underscored the urgency of collective action. The campaign comes in response to alarming statistics, with 4.7 million Kenyans reported to be using substances, including high rates of alcohol and tobacco dependency. Through awareness drives, capacity-building programs, and collaboration with stakeholders, the Ministry aims to foster a healthier, drug-free society.
The Agriculture Information Resource Center (AIRC) partnered with KBC and its radio stations to celebrate World Radio Day with a lively event in Kawangware. The event brought together members of the public, radio enthusiasts, and staff from both AIRC and KBC, showcasing the crucial role of radio in community engagement. Aligned with the Ministry of Smart Agriculture’s mandate, the celebration focused on climate change challenges and innovative solutions for farmers. Through the Sauti ya Mkulima initiative, the partnership underscored radio’s power as an e-extension tool, enhancing farmer awareness and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
The National Gender and Equality Commission officials led by chairperson, Rehema Jaldesa paid a courtesy call on the Principal Secretary in charge of State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action, Ms. Anne Wang’ombe where their discussions focused on strengthening collaboration in key areas such as Ensuring compliance with treaties on equality and non-discrimination, Advancing economic empowerment through the Care Economy and ratification of ILO Convention C190. They also discussed ways of
addressing the alarming rise in Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and the need to operationalize the GBV Information Management System. The NGEC team noted that they remain committed to working with Ms Wang’ombe’s office to promote gender equality and create a more inclusive and just society for all. The team also paid a courtesy call to the Tea Board of Kenya (TBK) to discuss progress in ensuring compliance with the two-thirds gender rule and the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the tea value chain.
The Director DCI Mr Mohamed I. Amin has lauded the collaboration between the Directorate and the Asset Recovery Agency (ARA), pledging continued partnerships in fighting money laundering, terrorist financing and other serious frauds with the aim of making the country a hostile ground for criminal enterprises. Mr Amin made these remarks during the handing over ceremony of two motor vehicles to the DCI by ARA, the two being part of a fleet of proceeds of crime identified, traced and seized by the Agency. Meanwhile, the Director ARA Brigadier (Rtd) Alice Mate also lauded the close cooperation with the DCI as one of the Agency’s key stakeholders, adding that today’s exercise aligned with ARA’s mandate to recover and dispose such seized proceeds of crime by giving them out to other government agencies. The event took place at DCI’s Mazingira Complex, and was witnessed by a host of senior officers from the DCI and the ARA delegation that accompanied Brig. (Rtd) Mate.
