The government has paid out Sh70 million in compensation to families affected by human-wildlife conflict in Laikipia County. The disbursement was made during a ceremony in Naibor, attended by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Rebecca Miano, Principal Secretary for Wildlife Silvia Museiya, Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu, Women Representative Jane Kagiri, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) oficials, and local leaders.
Deputy President Kindiki reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting communities impacted by wildlife, stating that eforts are underway to secure additional funding to broaden the compensation program.
He also announced plans to erect fencing around wildlife sanctuaries across the county to minimize future conflicts.
Miano emphasized the ministry’s move to digitize the compensation process, aiming to enhance eficiency, accelerate claims, and reduce fraudulent cases.
The initiative seeks to ensure timely and transparent support for victims of human- wildlife incidents.
The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife has rolled out a month-long initiative, dubbed Compensation Month, aimed at reaching communities hardest hit by human-wildlife conflict.
As part of the campaign, ministry oficials will tour six identified hotspot counties including Laikipia, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Narok and Kwale to disburse compensation to affected individuals and promote awareness on the importance of peaceful coexistence with wildlife.
The outreach effort seeks not only to provide financial relief to victims but also to foster dialogue and education around sustainable solutions to ongoing human-wildlife tensions.
The payout marks a significant step in addressing the longstanding challenges faced by communities living near wildlife habitats while reinforcing conservation efforts.
