Bosa Joyce Mantswe
By: Paula .O.M Otukile
Who are you?
My name is Bosa Joyce Mantswe. I love writing poetry and am now also looking forward to writing short story books.
When did you begin writing?
I started writing around 2004, but I never had the opportunity to publish any work due to financial constraints. However, I made my debut publication in 2023, and that marked a turning point in my writing journey.
How is the book industry in Botswana?
I believe the book industry in Botswana is growing and has shown impressive progress over the years. We’re seeing more cross-border collaborations that give local authors opportunities to grow. In poetry specifically, platforms are emerging that give poets space to perform and gain exposure.
However, challenges remain. Most poets are self-funded, and without proper financial support, it can be difficult to publish and promote our work.
How are your sales so far?
Sales have been low, largely because reading culture is still developing in Botswana. Many authors, especially independent ones, struggle financially due to limited book sales.
Who is your inspiration in terms of literary arts?

Locally, I am inspired by Mr. Moroka Moreri. Although he’s best known for his Setswana poetry, I admire how he plays with words and creates beauty through language.
Internationally, Maya Angelou is my greatest inspiration.
What motivated you to write?
Growing up, I had a difficult upbringing, and I found that therapy didn’t help much. But writing did. I found solace in words—I could express myself better through writing than speaking. It became my healing space.
What’s your five-year plan?
In five years, I hope to have grown as an author. I’m currently working on several projects and aim to have them published within this period.
Are you a reader?
Yes, absolutely. I love reading.
Do you plan to publish eBooks?
Yes. My first book is already available on Amazon, and I definitely plan to release more eBooks in the future.
Technology is growing and digital works are replacing analogue. Which do you prefer—reading online or physical books?
Personally, I prefer physical books. I love the feel of the pages, the smell of the paper—there’s something romantic and grounded about it. But from a business perspective, eBooks are convenient and help reach international readers more easily. Technology is changing things quickly, and it’s important to adapt.
What’s your encouragement to upcoming authors?
Focus on self-development. Be authentic. Don’t compare yourself with established authors—it can stifle your growth. Take time to learn, research, and grow your unique voice. Writing is a journey, not a race.
Your last word?
Be passionate about your work. That’s how truly beautiful pieces are created.
