Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has appealed for calm, understanding, and respect for the rule of law following recent tensions between civilians and police.
In a public address made on Wednesday, Mwaura acknowledged growing unrest after reports surfaced of a civilian allegedly shot by a police officer. He confirmed the injured individual is currently recovering in hospital and assured the public that the incident will be investigated thoroughly.
“Such actions are unacceptable. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has already taken up the matter, Justice will be pursued as required by law,” Mwaura said.
While expressing concern over the conduct of some officers, the spokesperson also cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands. He criticized the destruction of property and confrontations with police seen in some areas, urging citizens to express their concerns peacefully and within the law.
“Violence, from any side, does not move the country forward, we must remember that our rights come with responsibilities. Responding to wrongs with more wrongs only deepens the wound,” he added.
Mwaura called on political leaders, community heads, and civil society to foster dialogue instead of fueling division. He also warned against those using the unrest for political gain, saying this could worsen an already tense situation.
“It is both reckless and dangerous to exploit public frustrations for political advantage, leadership must be guided by integrity and service, not personal interest,” he continued to say.
He further proposed that lawmakers consider clearer guidelines for public demonstrations, including designated areas for protests, to allow peaceful expression while safeguarding public order and business continuity.
Concluding his remarks, Mwaura urged unity, reminding Kenyans of the shared values that hold the nation together,
“we must protect what we have built. Let us stand together, not as enemies, but as one people under one flag,” the government spokesperson concluded.
