Worth Noting:
- When I interacted with the neighbors around they said that they don’t know the one behind this destruction and they said they are in worry for the results that will come along with this destruction.
- They said that this areas usually floods when it rains and now they a wondering what will happen now that the wetland is no more .This means that the road will be cut off by floods and even surrounding communities gardens will be destroyed leaving the families suffering.
- Furthermore, the destruction is taking place on the roadside and it’s seen by everyone should we say that destruction of environment is now official?
Last week media reported about the ongoing destruction of wetland along Buwate road in Najera 11 Kira municipality .This wetland is under destruction by an individual who brought tracks of murrum and covered it off .This wetland have been catchment for water that slopes from Najjera, kungu, and Buwate hills. The wetland hosts aquatic life and surrounding communities have been using it to catch small fish and get herbal medicine for treatment. Some residents have been running nursery beds and flower enterprises around the wetland and they have been getting water to irrigate their initiatives from this wetland, all these individuals are under threat because of the destruction taking place.
It’s unfortunate that the destruction even happened during the day when the authority was seeing and no action was taken to stop the destruction .Last week the Kira municipality visited the wetland and ordered for its restoration and my question was where was the authority when the wetland was under destruction, and who is supposed to restore this wetland .The authority dint mind about the perpetuators behind the destruction because quick investigation was supposed to be done and the one behind this was supposed to be arrested . According to National environmental act 2019 the encroachers are supposed to pay for the restoration and in this case the perpetuator has to be brought to book and restore the wetland he destroyed. It’s not only this wetland that is under destruction but many wetlands have been covered off for human activities and other initiatives. With this current climatic changes we a facing today a lot of action need to be taken to save the environment.

If not how come that this can happen during a broad day light and perpetuators are not brought to book or stopped .To me this exposes the broken system that is not concerned with the environmental protection .
Therefore my letter is to request NEMA to do the following,
Arrest the perpetuators who is behind this destruction and deal with them according to the law.
Improve on the monitoring and supervision measures to save the wetlands for example this destruction has been taking place during the day and if it was monitored the destruction would have been stopped.
Increase sensitization about values of these wetlands and how they should be protected from destruction.
In addition the civil society organizations should also swing into action to fight the environmental destruction that is taking place to save lives for example African institute for energy government that have been educating communities about environmental protection should continue and bring on board other organizations to achieve more .
Finally the local communities should also raise up and defend the environment .It should be noted that environmental protection is an individual responsibility and everyone is affected when the destruction happens .I call upon everyone to participate in environmental restoration to restore the lost green economy in the country .You can plant a tree and it doesn’t matter the scope of work you do towards this cause .Remember me and you can make it happen and enjoy good environment that will favor agriculture production and protect wildlife .
