Dear Editor,
We, concerned residents of Nyeri County, write to express a growing and undeniable sentiment shared across our villages, towns, and marketplaces: it is time for Economist Ambassador Peter Munyiri to offer himself for consideration as Nyeri’s next Governor in the 2027 general elections.
Across the county, more and more voices are rising in unison, urging Munyiri; one of Nyeri’s most accomplished sons to step forward and bring his wealth of experience to the leadership of our devolved government. Many of us strongly believe that with his unmatched capabilities, academic background and deep roots in the region, he stands out as the ideal successor to Governor Mutahi Kahiga when his term ends.
Ambassador Munyiri’s academic journey speaks for itself. He is an alumnus of some of the world’s most distinguished institutions, including Oxford University, INSEAD Business School (France), the University of Nairobi, Strathmore University, the Chartered Institute of Bankers (UK), and JKUAT, among others.
Few leaders can match the breadth and depth of this training, which has shaped him into a seasoned economist and visionary strategist.
Born in Mathira and firmly connected to Kieni, Munyiri has never lost touch with the people of Nyeri. His professional career spans some of the region’s leading financial institutions.
He served as the Deputy Group Managing Director of KCB PLC, overseeing operations across East Africa. Prior to that, he held senior leadership roles at Barclays, Standard Chartered, and the Cooperative Bank, positions in which he consistently demonstrated transformative leadership.
Notably, during his time at Cooperative Bank, Munyiri played a pivotal role in steering a government task force appointed by former President Mwai Kibaki. Through this initiative, the government wrote off KSh5.8 billion in debts that had crippled the growth of the coffee and tea sectors for years.
This historic intervention directly benefited thousands of farmers in Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, and Meru counties.
Munyiri also previously served in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, sharpening his understanding of public-sector economics.
Beyond boardrooms, Munyiri is also one of us, a farmer. He actively practices dairy and crop production, with personal interests in coffee, tomatoes and tea among others. This hands-on experience makes him relatable to the thousands of families in Nyeri whose livelihoods depend on agriculture.
Many residents feel that his rare combination of global expertise and local understanding uniquely positions him to address Nyeri’s challenges and unlock its full potential.
If he chooses to heed the call of the people, we are convinced that his entry into the 2027 gubernatorial race would reshape the political landscape and give residents renewed hope in the future of our county.
As Nyeri begins to move into a politically active period ahead of 2027, one question continues to linger in people’s conversations; from homesteads to business centres to church gatherings: Will Peter Munyiri answer the call to lead?
Only time will tell. But as residents, our message is clear; Nyeri is ready for transformative leadership, and we believe Ambassador Peter Munyiri is the right man for the job.
Sincerely,
Concerned Residents of Nyeri County
