Women leaders and senior government officials hailed the election of Nyeri Woman Representative Rahab Mukami as President of the Women’s Caucus of the Pan-African Parliament, describing it as a major milestone for women’s leadership and representation in the country.
The celebrations, held during a women empowerment and thanksgiving gathering at Kiamuiru area in Nyeri Town Constituency, brought together prominent leaders including Anne Waiguru, Susan Kihika, Wahome Wamatinga, Veronica Maina, Irene Njoki and Eric Wamumbi among other leaders.
In a statement, the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) said Mukami’s election reflects the growing recognition of women’s leadership across the continent and reaffirmed the importance of inclusive governance in national development.
The Commission urged continued implementation of the constitutional principle requiring that no more than two-thirds of elective and appointive positions be occupied by one gender. It also called for stronger advocacy to increase the number of women elected to leadership positions and to protect affirmative action seats.

NGEC which was at the event represented by among others CEO Purity Ngina and Commissioner Margaret Karungaru noted that creating inclusive political spaces remains critical in enabling women to participate effectively in leadership and decision-making processes.
Speaking during the event, Mukami described her election as both a personal milestone and a victory for women across Kenya and Africa. She thanked fellow leaders and residents for their support and pledged to continue championing women empowerment and impactful leadership.
“Today, I gathered with women leaders and residents to strengthen the foundation of women empowerment at the grassroots while also giving thanks to God for my election as President of the Women’s Caucus at the Pan-African Parliament,” she said.
Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi praised Mukami’s achievement, saying her election would inspire women and young girls across the region to pursue leadership roles.
He said the gathering highlighted the growing momentum behind efforts to empower women socially, politically and economically.
Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga described the occasion as a celebration of resilience, courage and the rising influence of African women in leadership spaces.
The leaders emphasized the importance of supporting women-led initiatives and strengthening opportunities for women participation in governance and development.
The event also served as a broader platform for discussing grassroots empowerment and the role of women in shaping inclusive and transformative leadership across the continent.
Mukami’s election to the Pan-African Parliament Women’s Caucus is expected to place Kenya at the centre of continental discussions on gender equality, women’s rights and inclusive governance.
All the leaders present hailed Mukami saying she was equal to the task.
