Hussein Mohamed, President of Football Kenya Federation
Football federations are infamous for boardroom disputes, but few countries have as little time to spare as Kenya. As Africa gears up for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, football fans across the country want to see renovated stadiums, new uniforms and pitches full of players pushing for their country.
Instead, political tensions within the Football Kenya Federation risk derailing what should be Kenya’s moment to shine on the continent. In a meeting held in Nairobi this week, delegates from FIFA, CAF and FKF’s National Executive Committee agreed that Kenya must unite as a football family in the year ahead.
Unity Over Politics
“This was never about personalities. This has always been about Kenya preparing for AFCON 2027 and doing everything we can to ensure we host a successful tournament,” said Hussein Mohamed, President of Football Kenya Federation. Politics will always be a fact of life for any football administration. However, timing is everything. With AFCON set to be hosted in East Africa next year, internal decisions made within Football Kenya Federation will have greater consequence than ever before.
Stability in government not only affects FKF’s reputation, but Kenya’s ability to host the tournament. Governance and succession are no longer just an internal matter. They will define Kenya’s preparations for Africa’s most prestigious football tournament. Building institutional stability was a key theme discussed by Hussein and members of the National Executive Committee with delegates from FIFA and CAF. Ensuring federation matters are decided through constitutional means was a “critical request” made by football’s world governing bodies.
Hussein has consistently urged everyone involved to rise above political point scoring and make decisions in the best interests of Kenyan football.
“A solid foundation has been set. We must work hard to ensure the football family remains united so that we can successfully host the best football tournament on the continent.”
Why Unity Matters More Than Ever
The clock is ticking down to AFCON 2027. Aside from the on-field action, millions of Africans, BettingTop10 Kenya sportsbooks, and football fans around the world will look to Kenya and assess our organization of the tournament. Are stadiums ready? Did Kenya meet its commitments to CAF? How did the host nation’s team perform?
But thousands of additional questions are being answered behind the scenes by FKF. Preparation touches everything from tournament logistics and security plans to sponsorships, ticketing, team preparation, and more. Regardless of department, football doesn’t happen without leadership.
It’s for this reason that FKF feels it is so important not only to have these conversations but also to reach consensus on constitutional matters. For supporters of the game, anything less than a unified federation risks undermining years of work by volunteers and officials across the country.
A group within FKF’s NEC recently attempted to suspend Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohamed. The matter was referred to FIFA, which ruled that the suspension was unconstitutional.
The stakes could not be higher for Kenyan football. Not only is AFCON 2027 set to be hosted in Kenya for the first time, but preparations are already well underway. Kenya’s economy will benefit from jobs and economic activity caused by the tournament. Teams from across Africa will flock to East Africa. Hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions will see thousands of visitors, and fans of African football will enjoy a welcome opportunity to see their favorite teams up close.
The Road to 2027 Is About More Than Hosting
Stadiums, and training facilities may grab the headlines, but strong administration has been the backbone of successful AFCON hosts for decades. Investors want to see that Kenyan football is well-run before they commit to partnerships that can help develop the game at grassroots level. Players and officials need to trust that the federation has their best interests at heart.
While FKF continues preparations for AFCON 2027, the federation is also focused on strengthening governance, developing grassroots football, and protecting the interests of all Kenyan footballers.
