Kenya Dairy Board National Chairman Genesio Mugo
Solar-powered cooling units under the LVCSP mark a concrete step in transforming dairy farming across the Rift Valley

Kenya Dairy Board National Chairman Genesio Mugo has praised the government’s continued investment in the dairy sector, describing Kenya’s position as Africa’s leading milk producer as a significant achievement under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Mugo was speaking at the handover of solar-powered bulk milk coolers under the Livestock Value Chain Support Project (LVCSP), calling the initiative clear proof of the government’s commitment to modernising the dairy value chain through improved infrastructure and farmer-focused interventions.
The handover ceremony, held in Nandi and Uasin Gishu counties, was presided over by Director of Livestock Production Bishar Fille, who represented Principal Secretary for Livestock Development Jonathan Mueke.
The solar-powered cooling facilities are expected to reduce post-harvest losses, improve milk quality, support value addition and widen market access for dairy farmers. The project is also designed to strengthen dairy cooperatives and lift household incomes by 30 percent by 2028.
More than 15,500 dairy farmers stand to benefit from the initiative, which will support the aggregation of approximately 31,000 litres of milk daily, create more than 200 direct jobs and pump over KSh122 million into modern dairy infrastructure.
Mugo reaffirmed that the government remains committed to practical, farmer-centred solutions — ones that raise productivity, improve livelihoods and unlock the full potential of Kenya’s livestock sector, with dairy farming now a key pillar of agricultural transformation under BETA.
