Educators, innovators and policymakers unite to advance assistive technology in Kenyan classrooms
By John Kariuki
The Kenya Institute of Special Education yesterday launched its Disability Inclusion Conference 2026 at its Kasarani campus, bringing together educators, policymakers, researchers, innovators and development partners to advance inclusive education and expand access to assistive technologies for learners with disabilities.
Principal Secretary for Basic Education John Ololtuua officially opened the conference, hosted by KISE Director General Norman Kiogora. The event runs under the theme “Advancing Disability Inclusion Through Assistive Technology and Innovation.”
Ololtuua reaffirmed the State Department for Basic Education’s commitment to ensuring that every learner, including those living with disabilities, has access to the support, technology and opportunities needed to learn, grow and reach their full potential.
Kiogora described the conference as a timely platform for translating policy commitment into practical action, noting that access to education without meaningful inclusion remains an incomplete achievement.
The gathering is expected to generate concrete recommendations on assistive technology adoption, teacher training and policy frameworks to strengthen inclusive education across Kenya.
