Boda boda riders should avoid taking law into their own hands

By: Joseph kamau Kiragu

The boda boda sector in Kenya has been a source of employment opportunities, particularly among the youth. A significant number of the youths have been using it to empower themselves and have been earning a livelihood from it. However, multiple boda boda operators have become too rogue and unruly in our country. They have been taking the law into their hands, especially when involved in accidents with motorists. When such accidents happen, they are known to destroy the vehicles involved, torch them, beat the drivers, and even steal from them. This impunity has reached frightening levels, and something needs to be done urgently. Failure to take this menace seriously, the boda boda operators will become dangerous and be a ticking bomb in our society.

On Monday, a video was circulating in social media where a group of boda boda riders could be seen harassing a lady driver along Forest Road. This incident was disgusting, traumatizing and unethical. The assault was more shocking since it happened on a busy road in the daytime. Although it was allegedly said that the lady was involved in an accident where he knocked a boda boda rider, a group of boda boda riders decided to take the law into their own hands, which is against the law. They should know that a constitution guides Kenya, and no one is above the law. Therefore, such harassment was unacceptable at all. The incident was to be a police case whereby they could report the issue, and the police could investigate the matter and follow the law accordingly.

The government should enforce laws that every boda boda rider should adhere to and deal sternly with those who violate them. This is because even when the riders knock the motorists and cause an accident, they go ahead and blame the motorist drivers. They should follow all the traffic rules since most of them do not follow them even after being aware. Notably, this is an electioneering period, and most politicians use boda boda riders as their campaign tools when trying to woo voters. Therefore, politicians should promote goodwill and help to resolve the menace.
