The Transport and Infrastructure Committee chaired by George Kariuki has laid out a clear blue print for the last quarter of the financial year 2024/25, with an intention to clear any work backlog, especially on Bills and Reports before it.
During its inaugural sitting this year, the chairperson emphasized the Committee’s intention to deliver on its mandate, emphasizing that the MPs will take no excuses from any entity that it oversights when called upon to appear before the committee to address concerns raised by Kenyans over the gaps in the transport sector.
Among the proposed work include the consideration and adoption of the Kenya Roads Board (Amendment) Bill, the National Transport and Safety Authority (Amendment) Bill 2024, the Public Transport (Motorcycle Regulation) Bill, No. 38 of 2023.
Consideration of legislative proposals and engagement with various stakeholders, consideration of petitions before the committee including the Digital Bodaboda drivers regarding legal recognition and protection of E- hailing motorcycle riders are also part of the MPs’ proposed priority areas of work.
The committee also intend to meet with the Federation of Public transport sector to be apprised on the challenges faced by PCV operators.
Members will also oversight on the operations of the SGR and the management of the Railway Development Levy Fund. They also plan to look into the operations of the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and identify any legislative gaps in the sector.
The committee will also be conducting site visits to various projects including the Kenya Ports Authority, Likoni Ferry, Moi International Airport, and the Kisumu Shipyard.
Top on its agenda, is also the inspection of several road projects across the country to obtain a better understanding of site conditions and status of implementation of programs.
