DCP Alleges State-Sponsored Violence Ahead Of Narok By-Elections

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has accused the National Police Service of orchestrating violence against its members and supporters in Narok Town during campaign activities on Monday.
In a strongly worded letter addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua alleges that militia, uniformed police officers, and plain-clothed operatives, including members of the Rapid Deployment Unit, were deployed to intimidate DCP supporters ahead of the by-elections scheduled for tomorrow.
Gachagua claims the police blocked all highways into Narok Town and violently disrupted a DCP campaign meeting for the party’s candidate in Narok Town Ward, Douglas Masikonde, using live ammunition and teargas canisters.
The party leader also alleged that innocent traders, women, and children were beaten during the incident.
The letter singles out two police officers attached to Murang’a County Woman Representative Betty Maina, accusing them of coordinating the violence in Narok.
Gachagua claims these officers were previously involved in similar attacks in Murang’a County on 27th July and again on Friday last week.
“Your calculated silence and inaction impute involvement, irresponsibility, recklessness, or incompetence at play,” Gachagua wrote in the letter, warning that any further violence ahead of the by-elections would be on the IGP’s hands.
The DCP demanded the immediate withdrawal of the two officers from Narok and called on Inspector General Kanja to take decisive action.
The party also suggested that if the IGP cannot control the police service, he should resign.
Attempts to reach the National Police Service for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
The Narok by-elections, seen as a significant political contest, now face heightened tensions amid the DCP’s allegations.
