Gender-Based Violence: A National Crisis” Or “Breaking The Silence On GBV

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains one of the most pressing and harmful issues in today’s society. It affects both men and women and poses serious threats to individuals, families, communities, and national development. While women and girls are often the most recorded victims, men and boys also suffer in silence, making it clear that GBV is a human issue—not just a women’s issue.

GBV takes many forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse directed at someone because of their gender. It is rooted in power inequality, harmful cultural norms, and unequal access to resources or rights. Whether it occurs in homes, schools, workplaces, or online, GBV leaves permanent scars, often resulting in trauma, poor mental health, injury, or even death.

One of the greatest threats posed by GBV is to public health. Survivors frequently suffer in silence due to fear, stigma, or lack of support. This can lead to depression, suicidal thoughts, and chronic physical problems. Male victims, in particular, face societal expectations about masculinity that often prevent them from speaking out or seeking help. GBV also undermines economic growth. When women live in fear or endure abuse, they are less productive, miss work or school, and struggle to participate in development activities. This weakens families and perpetuates cycles of poverty.

Beyond health and economic consequences, GBV erodes social unity. It fosters mistrust, fear, and broken relationships within communities. In extreme cases, it contributes to conflict and displacement, especially during times of crisis.

Gender-based violence is not merely a private matter—it is a national threat. Addressing it requires collective action, including education, stronger law enforcement, support systems for survivors, and a commitment to challenging harmful gender stereotypes. Every person deserves to live free from violence, regardless of gender.
