Governor Kawira Joins Leaders In Addressing Miraa Sector Crisis

Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza participated in a high-level consultative meeting on emerging issues affecting the miraa sub-sector.
The meeting, convened by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development under the Office of the Principal Secretary, brought together key government officials, including Cabinet Secretary Eng. Eric Muuga, Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Principal Secretary Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh Paul, Senator Kathuri Murungi, and Members of Parliament.
Also in attendance was Dr. Bruno Linyiru, Director General of the Agriculture and Food Authority.
The meeting focused on critical challenges facing miraa farmers, particularly issues of transport costs, licensing hurdles, pricing instability, and quantity restrictions.
The concerns have led to a farmer-led boycott, significantly disrupting the miraa supply chain.
Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, the leaders agreed to reconvene today to formulate sustainable solutions.
Governor Mwangaza emphasized the importance of addressing these challenges promptly to protect the livelihoods of the 107,000 farmers who depend on the crop.
The miraa industry remains a vital economic pillar in Meru County, with an estimated value of KSh13 billion and an annual production of 32,000 metric tonnes.
Leaders stressed the need for immediate action to stabilize the sector and ensure that farmers receive fair compensation for their produce.
As discussions continue, miraa stakeholders remain hopeful that government intervention will lead to policy reforms that secure the future of the industry.
