Governor Mutahi Kahiga issues status of COVID-19 pandemic in Nyeri County

- Owing to the high demand for medical oxygen at Mt Kenya hospital, the County Government of Nyeri in collaboration with the National Ministry of Health is in the process of installing a bulk liquid oxygen cylinder to supplement the plant. Other functional Covid-19 isolation facilities in the County include: Mwai Kibaki Hospital, Outspan Hospital and G.K Prison King’on’go.
- The Governor also called upon Nyeri residents to continue adhering to all the Covid-19 containment measures in order to stop the spread of the disease, safeguarding both people’s health and economy.
Governor Mutahi Kahiga has called upon Nyeri residents to get vaccinated in a bid to curb the further spread of Covid-19.
This, he said while issuing a presser at the Governor’s Office, where he noted that in the last three weeks, the county has experienced a surge in Covid-19 infections with the positivity rate being at 31% in comparison to 13% reported a month ago.
He added that so far 33 patients are currently admitted in various isolation facilities, 4 of whom are on supplemental oxygen, with approximately 50% of the patients having not received any Covid-19 vaccine.
As such, he encouraged people to get vaccinated as the vaccines are being readily and freely administered across all the health facilities in the County.
So far, a total of 344,834 and 280,693 persons have received 1st and 2nd dose of Covid-19 vaccine respectively while 19,107 have received their booster doses.
Currently, Mt Kenya Hospital, which has a 37-bed capacity, remains the designated County Covid-19 isolation facility. The County Government is in the process of equipping and staffing a new 35- bed capacity isolation ward within the health facility. The facility also has piped oxygen from an oxygen plant that is piped to all beds.

The Governor also called upon Nyeri residents to continue adhering to all the Covid-19 containment measures in order to stop the spread of the disease, safeguarding both people’s health and economy.
He added that despite the rising burden of Covid-19 disease, the Department of Health has witnessed reduced adherence to public health measures and Covid-19 protocols among the general public which is largely fueling the transmission.
It is in this regard that the County Government of Nyeri through the County Inter-governmental Covid-19 Emergency Committee resolves to heighten various measures and interventions aimed at mitigating the spread of COVID-19 disease to safeguard the health of Nyeri residents.
These include but not limited to: Immediate activation of the weekly County and Subcounty multi-agency review and coordination committee meetings, Continued enforcement of Covid-19 protocols through the multi-agency committees, Heightened public sensitization on Covid-19 disease and vaccine through radio-talks, public address systems, letters to churches & schools among others and Intensified and targeted community Covid-19 testing
Others are calling upon all county leaders to advocate for adherence to Covid-19 preventive measures among their followers, All persons who received their 1st Covid-19 vaccine dose and are due for the second one are encouraged to go for it from any of our County Government facilities, Those who received their second dose and have completed 6 months are advised to go for the booster dose, Premises/institutions that attract public gatherings, must ensure all staff and clients always wear face masks. They should all have a functional hand-washing facility with soap and running water and commit to fully implement the Covid-19 protocol guidelines as issued by the National MoH.
