Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has strongly defended the proposed construction of Itugururu, Airstrip in Igambang’ombe ward, Chuka/Igambang’ombe, Constituency.
Speaking yesterday during burial ceremony of his cousin, Mr Edwin Mbuba Mbungu at Itugururu Agricultural Training Institute, Governor Njuki faulted a few elected leaders opposing the project arguing that it would stop tarmacking of a road that passes through the area.
He said in the entire Tharaka Nithi County there is only one gazetted, airstrip-Itugururu, which was being used during colonial period and it will be constructed alongside the tarmacking of the road because of the long-term economic and infrastructural benefits which it would bring to the county.
“As long as I am the governor of this county, we are going to construct both the airstrip and tarmac the road,” said Governor Njuki .
He said the project would open up Tharaka Nithi to greater economic opportunities, including improved transportation and trade, as well as fostering tourism in the county.
The Governor pointed out that the construction of airstrips and airports in other parts of Kenya, such as in Isiolo and Kitui, has led to significant boosts in regional economies.
“Tharaka Nithi has the potential to become a major hub for agricultural exports, tourism, and regional business. For that to happen, we need to build infrastructure that will connect us to the rest of the world,” he said.
Governor Njuki further argued that the airstrip was part of a broader vision for the development of the county, one that includes boosting trade, enhancing emergency services, and improving access to healthcare and education.
Addressing critics, the Governor pointed out that “progress sometimes faces resistance, but it is our responsibility to push for the future of Tharaka Nithi, not just for today, but for generations to come. We cannot afford to let politics of the moment derail projects that will uplift the livelihoods of our people in the future.”
In the face of this opposition, Governor Njuki remains resolute, calling on all stakeholders to come together and focus on the larger goal of transforming Tharaka Nithi into a thriving, interconnected region not just for the current but also for the benefit of generations to come.
Tharaka Nithi County Assembly Speaker John Mbabu assured the county boss that the legislative arm of the county goverment strongly supports his development agendas including construction of the airstrip.
He urged the residents to also support his bid for Member of Parliament for Chuka/Igambang’ombe Constituency in 20227 noting that given a chance he would develop the region.
On health, Governor Njuki asked Health executive Dr Gichuyia Nthuraku to ensure that drugs for illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes are always available to avoid deaths that could be prevented.
He urged those suffering from such illnesses to strictly adhere to doctor’s advises including avoiding taking alcohol.
