- Radio has also played a critical role in emergency situations and natural disasters. It has provided timely information and updates to people, which has been crucial in saving lives and helping people to stay safe. In many developing countries, radio is still the only source of information for a large part of the population.

World Radio Day is celebrated on February 13th each year and it is an opportunity to celebrate the role of radio in bringing people together and promoting understanding and peace. This day also provides an opportunity to reflect on the important role that radio has played in our lives and the benefits it brings to communities, especially in remote and isolated areas.
The day is organized by the United Nations and is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of radio and its impact on the world. The theme of World Radio Day changes each year, with past themes including “Radio and Sports,” “Radio in Times of Emergency and Disaster,” and “Youth and Radio.” The day is marked by events such as concerts, exhibitions, debates, and awards ceremonies, which celebrate the diversity and power of radio. The aim of World Radio Day is to encourage greater use of radio, to improve access to information, and to promote freedom of expression through the medium of radio.
The theme for World Radio Day 2023 is “Radio and Peace”. This theme recognizes the role of radio in promoting peace. Radio has been the first mass medium and has remained one of the most popular and accessible ways of reaching out to a large audience. Radio has been instrumental in connecting people, fostering democracy, and spreading news, entertainment, and information. It has been a source of comfort, education, and inspiration for millions of people around the world.

As we commemorate this day, lets take a glimpse of the State of freedom of media in Kenya. Freedom of the media in Kenya has been a contentious issue in recent years. While the constitution of Kenya provides for freedom of expression and of the press, there have been instances where this right has been threatened or violated.
In recent years, the Kenyan government has taken steps that have been criticized for limiting freedom of the media. For example, in 2018 the government shut down several TV and radio stations for a few days, citing national security concerns during the elections. There have also been instances of journalists being harassed for their reporting.
In addition, media ownership in Kenya is highly concentrated, with a few individuals controlling a large portion of the media outlets. This can result in biased reporting and limited diversity of viewpoints in the media.
However, despite these challenges, there is a vibrant media landscape in Kenya with many independent journalists and media organizations producing high-quality journalism. Additionally, the use of social media and the internet has enabled citizens to share their own stories and perspectives, providing an important counterbalance to traditional media outlets.
Overall, while the state of freedom of the media in Kenya has faced challenges, it remains an important aspect of the country’s democratic system and efforts are being made to safeguard it.
Today, I propose some steps that our Kenyan government could take to support and grow the media industry, including:
One is Providing financial support: The government could provide financial support to media companies through subsidies, tax incentives, or grants. This can help to mitigate the risks associated with the development and production of new content, and enable media companies to invest in new technologies and infrastructure.
Second is Fostering a favorable regulatory environment: The government could create a favorable regulatory environment for the media industry by reducing red tape and bureaucracy, and providing clear and stable rules for the industry. This can help to encourage investment and innovation in the sector.
Third is Supporting media education and training: The government could support media education and training programs to help build a strong and talented workforce for the industry. This could include funding for media schools, providing scholarships and grants, and supporting professional development programs.
Fourth is Promoting media diversity: The government could take steps to promote media diversity and ensure that a wide range of voices and perspectives are represented in the media. This could include measures to support independent media, promote community media, and ensure that media ownership is not concentrated in the hands of a few large corporations.
These are just a few examples of the steps that a government could take to support and grow the media industry. Not Kenya alone but also other countries. Ultimately, the specific steps taken will depend on the needs and circumstances of the country, as well as the goals and priorities of the government.
In conclusion, I need to remind everyone that World Radio Day is an important opportunity to reflect on the significance of radio and its impact on the world. This day provides an opportunity to celebrate the power of radio as a medium of communication and its ability to bring people together, foster understanding, and provide comfort, education, and inspiration. It is a day to remember the role of radio in promoting diversity, fostering inclusive and pluralistic societies, and in promoting peace, development, and human rights.
Happy Radio Day all.
