From ice cream to yoghurt, a shortage at the farm is emptying fridges across the country
By Sharon Mumo
When milk runs short, the effects travel fast. Ice cream disappears from freezers, yoghurt thins out on supermarket shelves, butter becomes a luxury and bakeries start cutting corners. Kenya’s ongoing milk crisis is no longer just a farmer’s problem — it has become everybody’s problem.
Milk is the backbone of an entire product chain. Manufacturers of ice cream, cheese, cream and flavoured milk depend on a consistent, affordable supply to keep production running. When that supply falters, costs rise, output falls and prices at the till follow. For low-income consumers and students already navigating a brutal cost-of-living squeeze, dairy products that were once everyday staples are quietly becoming occasional indulgences.
The pressure is sharpest for small businesses. An ice cream vendor operating on thin margins cannot easily absorb a spike in wholesale prices. A bakery relying on butter and cream for its daily output faces the same bind. When input costs climb, the choice is brutal: raise prices, cut portions or close.
The crisis traces back to the farm. Dairy farmers are contending with expensive animal feed, rising veterinary costs and unreliable markets — a combination that suppresses production precisely when demand is growing. Without intervention at that level, processors and retailers will continue managing a shortage they did not create.
Addressing this requires coordinated action: better support for farmers, stronger cold-chain infrastructure and early-warning systems to catch supply disruptions before they reach the shelf.
Kenya’s dairy industry feeds millions. It cannot afford to run on empty.
