In a significant step towards enhancing Kenya’s digital infrastructure, the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) has partnered with Syokinet Solutions, an internet service provider (ISP), to utilize its Mombasa-Nairobi fiber optic cable network. The collaboration is poised to deliver high-speed internet to homes, businesses, and community networks in the two cities.

With a 1.6 TeraBits Per Second (Tbps) data capacity, the fiber optic network promises to offer reliable gigabit internet speeds, marking a transformative step in Kenya’s internet connectivity landscape. According to KPC’s Managing Director Joe Sang, the partnership will play a crucial role in supporting the government’s Digital Superhighway initiative, which aims to accelerate economic growth through technological advancement.

“The strategic partnership with Syokinet will unlock additional connectivity and offer high-speed internet services for homes and businesses between Nairobi and Mombasa,” Sang noted. He further emphasized the importance of the move in contributing to Kenya’s broader digital transformation agenda. “This is a major step forward in advancing Kenya’s digital infrastructure and supporting the government’s visionary Digital Superhighway agenda to accelerate the country’s transformation, creation of jobs, and economic growth.”

The Digital Superhighway, a key component of the government’s ambitious digital agenda, aims to expand the country’s digital backbone by laying 100,000 kilometers (62,000 miles) of fiber optic cable. Additionally, the initiative seeks to establish 25,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots in market centers across Kenya and create 1,450 digital hubs in every ward. These efforts are designed to boost digital inclusion, expand broadband connectivity, and create new opportunities for businesses and communities nationwide.

The collaboration between KPC and Syokinet marks the latest development in KPC’s ongoing efforts to onboard leading telecommunications companies and internet service providers (ISPs) to its robust fiber optic cable network. Over the years, KPC has successfully integrated major players such as Safaricom, MTN, Airtel Network, Jamii Telcom, and Wananchi into its fiber infrastructure. The addition of Syokinet is expected to enhance internet service delivery and further broaden access to fast, reliable connectivity.

“By combining our internet services expertise with KPC’s impressive fiber infrastructure, we can enhance the quality of life by empowering customers with faster, more reliable connections,” said Syokinet CEO Ian Kasyoki. He expressed optimism about the future of Kenya’s digital landscape and Syokinet’s role in shaping it. “Syokinet is committed to working with partners like KPC to achieve the government’s vision of a digitally-enabled society,” Kasyoki added.

The enhanced connectivity between Nairobi and Mombasa is anticipated to create new opportunities for businesses and communities, enabling them to leverage the power of high-speed internet to drive innovation and growth. The move also aligns with the government’s broader goal of promoting digital literacy and facilitating access to online services, which are crucial to Kenya’s socio-economic development.

As Kenya continues to prioritize digital infrastructure development, partnerships like the one between KPC and Syokinet are expected to play a pivotal role in fostering a digitally-connected nation. With the Digital Superhighway initiative gaining momentum, the country is well-positioned to become a leader in the region’s digital transformation efforts.

The partnership, which combines KPC’s vast fiber optic network with Syokinet’s ISP expertise, represents a key milestone in Kenya’s journey toward achieving universal broadband connectivity and ensuring that all citizens can benefit from the opportunities presented by the digital age.
