On Wednesday 27th March , marked a significant milestone for the water industry as the Kenya Water Institute (KEWI) officially launched its Centre of Excellence in Non Revenue Water Management. The inauguration ceremony, attended by key stakeholders and industry experts, highlighted KEWI’s commitment to addressing the critical issue of non revenue water (NRW) in the region.
NRW, which includes water losses due to leaks, theft, and inefficiencies, has been a longstanding challenge for water utilities worldwide. In Kenya, NRW has been a major concern, leading to significant financial losses and hindering efforts to provide reliable water services to communities.
The newly established Centre of Excellence is poised to become a hub for innovation, research, and capacity building in NRW management. It aims to develop cutting-edge strategies, technologies, and best practices to reduce water losses and improve operational efficiency across water utilities.
During the launch event, KEWI’s CEO Dr. Leiro Letangule, EBS highlighted the institute’s vision of becoming a leader in NRW management not only in Kenya but also in the broader African context. The Centre of Excellence will collaborate with international partners, industry leaders, and academic institutions to foster knowledge exchange and drive impactful solutions.
One of the key focus areas of the Centre will be training and skill development for water professionals. Through specialized courses, workshops, and certifications, KEWI aims to empower professionals with the latest tools and techniques to tackle NRW effectively.
In addition to training, the Centre will conduct research projects to enhance understanding of NRW dynamics, implement pilot projects to demonstrate innovative solutions, and provide advisory services to water utilities seeking to improve their NRW performance.
The launch of KEWI’s Non Revenue Water Centre of Excellence signals a proactive step towards a more sustainable and efficient water sector in Kenya. By harnessing expertise, fostering collaboration, and embracing innovation, KEWI is poised to make a significant impact in reducing water losses and ensuring access to clean water for all
