Laikipia County Deputy Governor Rebuen Kamuri yesterday held a meeting a consultative meeting with various stakeholders over drought situation in the area.
The deputy governor held the meeting with among others, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), Chief Officers in charge of Finance, Administration, and Agriculture, Director Water, and Natural Resources as well as Sub-County Administrators and their wards colleagues.
They discussed the drought situation and management in semi-arid county.
As the Deputy was meeting the local stakeholders, his boss, Governor Joshua Irungu was holding a similar meeting in Nairobi with his colleagues from the affected counties across the country.
The national meeting was convened by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua whose conclusion was a visit to State House, Nairobi where President William Ruto flagged off relief food for both human and livestock.
The county governments and the national government are partnering to initiate immediate interventions to cushion residents and livestock in the affected areas.
The country has experienced a prolonged period of drought leading to shortage of water and animal pasture.
The situation is occasioned by depressed short rains in October, November and December of 2021 and subsequent total failure of March, April and May 2022.
