As graduation nears, one question haunts every graduate: what next? In a country where job opportunities are scarce, we must take control of our futures. Life truly begins when you start paying your own bills and reduce your dependence on your parents. By utilizing the skills acquired during your time on campus, you can venture into small businesses or freelance work that helps sustain you and covers your daily expenses.
Job opportunities in Kenya are a significant challenge, especially for the youth, particularly recent graduates with degrees from various university faculties. Many end up facing depression due to the lack of employment opportunities. However, we can change our stories by taking ownership of our skills and using them to create opportunities instead of waiting for them to appear.
The world is rapidly changing, and technology is advancing at an incredible pace. This is why it is important to invest in the skills we have acquired, as finding job opportunities is becoming increasingly difficult. For instance, many members of Generation Z are investing their free time in online job opportunities such as freelancing on platforms like Google .Some freelance skills that are growing in demand and playing a significant role in global advancement include data analysis, graphic design, video editing, cybersecurity, sales, and digital marketing, among others in which most of youths have venture into this practices to sharpen their skills and to be aligned with advancement in technology.
As the saying goes, “If you believe, you become.” By being creative and pursuing what we believe in, we can change the perception that there are no jobs after completing a four-year degree. In the face of limited job opportunities, some may be tempted to fall into destructive habits, but there are better paths. Let’s utilize our skills and change our own narratives by building our futures with the resources we have.
