Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and her Kitui counterpart Julius Malombe have formed an Ad-hoc committee to ensure equal use of Masinga Dam water for both counties.
The committee consists of Senior Water Executives from both counties, who are responsible for ensuring equal utilisation of the dam.
The tussle over the dam’s usage has been ongoing, with Machakos accusing Kitui residents of dominating the water reservoir in Machakos.
Governor Wavinya and Malombe met with water department delegations to deliberate on water utilisation and ensure both counties benefit.
“Dr. Malombe and I have met with our delegation drawn from the water departments to deliberate on how to utilise water from Masinga Dam and ensure both counties benefit,” said the Machakos Governor.
They agreed to find permanent solutions that would satisfy both counties and end the Masinga Dam tussle.
Malombe assured Machakos and Kitui residents that they have agreed to a realistic timetable and plans for the ad hoc committee.
Masinga Dam is the largest man-made lake in Kenya and is among the largest 7 forks water catchment areas that stretches to 2,200 meters long and has a capacity of 1.56 billion cubic meters of water.
It is used for agricultural purposes, industrial developments, and sporting activities; it is also used for water regulation, where it has an emergency spillway to mitigate excessive flooding.
