In a pivotal moment for infrastructure development in Kenya’s Homa Bay County, the National Land Commission (NLC) Chief Executive Officer, CHRP Kabale Tache Arero, alongside NLC Chair, Gershom Otachi, officially handed reservation orders for land designated for the rehabilitation of Kendu Bay and Mbita Piers to the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

These orders signify a significant step forward, empowering KPA to proceed with advertising for the much-needed rehabilitation works at the two piers, which will in turn bolster operations along the shores of Lake Victoria.

The rehabilitation of Kendu Bay and Mbita Piers holds promise for a transformative impact on the region’s economic landscape. Specifically, the Kendu Bay pier is poised to serve as an off-taker of Kisumu port, facilitating the seamless transport of goods to Uganda through water transportation systems.

This development is expected to catalyze exports from Homa Bay to neighboring countries such as Uganda and Tanzania, thereby fostering economic growth and facilitating cross-border trade.

In response to this milestone, Mr. William K. Tenay, the KPA Manager for Marine Operations at Kisumu Port, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders involved in the project.

During a press conference held at the Commission’s headquarters, NLC Chair Gershom Otachi commended the collaborative spirit between the National Government, Homa Bay County, and KPA in advancing this crucial infrastructure project. Otachi lauded KPA’s dedication to driving the development and execution of the rehabilitation project, emphasizing the significance of such partnerships in fostering sustainable development.

Otachi specifically acknowledged the National Land Commission for facilitating the issuance of the reservation orders, highlighting the importance of streamlined processes in project implementation.

Dr. Peter Ogolla, the Homa Bay County Executive Committee Member for Lands, also weighed in, emphasizing the anticipated positive impact of the projects on the region’s economy and underscoring the role of trade in driving growth.

In light of the collaborative success, Otachi called for further partnership between the National Land Commission and the County government to ensure the seamless implementation of similar projects in the future.

The issuance of reservation orders marks a crucial milestone in the journey towards revitalizing Kendu Bay and Mbita Piers, signaling hope for enhanced economic prospects and improved connectivity for the region.
