A political gathering turns to chaos as flames and questions engulf a Kisumu church compound

Fire, not faith, dominated the scene outside St Stephen’s Cathedral on Sunday, when several motorcycles were set ablaze during a political gathering attended by senior leaders, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and former Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o.
Witnesses said a group had assembled near the church shortly before the motorcycles caught fire, though the exact circumstances remain unclear. Police have launched investigations to establish the cause of the blaze and identify those responsible.
Officers were deployed to the scene to restore order and secure the area. No injuries had been officially confirmed by the time of publication, though the incident sparked visible tension among those gathered.
The fire has drawn widespread public attention, with leaders calling for calm and urging patience as investigators work to determine what triggered it. Authorities said the inquiry is ongoing, and no arrests had been made by press time.
