Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi yesterday reached out to his Tanzanian counterpart following reports of Kenyans caught up in the post-election unrest that has rocked parts of the neighbouring country .
A statement issued by Mr. Jacob Ng’etich, the Director of Press Service in the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs said the PCS held consultation through a telephone call to Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation where they addressed the safety and welfare of Kenyans affected by the recent violence.
The call followed reports that John Okoth Ogutu, a Kenyan teacher at Sky Schools in Dar es Salaam, was shot dead in the Ubungo District on October 29 during post-election skirmishes.
His body has reportedly gone missing from the mortuary at Mwananyamala Hospital, prompting concern from his family.
During the discussions, Mudavadi emphasized the need to ensure the protection of Kenyan nationals residing in Tanzania, many of whom are engaged in legitimate business and professional activities contributing to the country’s economy.
The two leaders agreed to handle any emerging incidents through established diplomatic and consular mechanisms, in accordance with international law and the East African Community (EAC) Common Market Protocol.
The Tanzanian government assured that all foreign nationals conducting lawful activities within its borders will continue to enjoy full protection under the law.
Mudavadi reiterated Kenya’s commitment to maintaining the strong and friendly relations that have long existed between the two nations and to supporting regional peace and stability through the East African Community framework.
Meanwhile, the Kenya High Commission in Dar es Salaam has urged Kenyan nationals living in Tanzania to remain calm, law-abiding, and in contact with consular officials for assistance and updates.
