A section of Mt Kenya women parliamentarians led by Nyandarua women Rep Faith Gitau Wairimu earlier yesterday at parliament premises citied their concern on recent attempts of reviving and sanitization of outlawed Mungiki sect issuing sentiments that the group presence in the earlier past has disrupted the social fabric of Kenya society through alleged extortion ,murder violence and distraction of property.
According to the women legislators they are calling upon interior cabinet secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki to crackdown the outlawed group or else they will organize a national demonstration in condemning the terror gang.
“Like a wildfire that destroys the natural ecosystem, Mungiki presence has in the past disrupted the social fabric of our community and society at large. The sect fed on the discontent amongst the unemployed youth in the 1980s by sowing seeds of division and mistrust amongst neighbors and communities” cautioned Hon Faith Gitau.
Naivasha MP Jane Kihara said that in Naivasha many women suffered trauma when their youths were being recruited to the group and stated the atrocities committed then being female genital mutilation, raping of women and girls at times in full glare of their family members.
“Am a witness of what happened in Naivasha intimidation and extortion in public transport ,extortion of construction businesses ,intimidation and imposition of illegal taxes on farmers and household, mindless violence and killings .” Said Jane Kihara.
The legislators tabled a flow of events since 2002 where more than 50 people were reported to be killed when Mungiki clashed with matatu owners in Nairobi, in 2003 the sect clashed with police in Nairobi for two consecutive days leaving at least 2 officers dead and 74 of its members imprisoned ,in June 2007 the mungiki sect started a wave of murders aimed at instilling fear on the populace by beheading several matatu drivers ,conductors and perceived traitors to the diabolical cause.
Ann Muratha Kiambu woman Representative also called out for the interior ministry to help in sweeping out the sect and citing reasons that the recent gathering being organized around the mountain is a mode of radicalization for the youths who have been turning out in huge numbers.
“Media over the years has been known to push narratives, I call upon the media fraternity to stop giving airtime to this group since they are recruiting our youths and as parents we know and can read from a distance what will happen if nothing will happen on addressing the group re-emergence.” Said Kiambu Woman Rep Ann Muratha.
